Top 40+ Email APIs and Services for Developers (Updated 2026)

40+ email APIs sorted by the job you need done: sending transactional email, mailbox access, template builders and email verification. Links to every vendor, who each one fits, and how to choose.

BackendShrey Vijayvargiya

I first posted a bare list of email APIs in 2024. It was a table of names and links, and it still gets visitors from Google every week, so it deserves a proper rewrite. Same URL, the original 35 tools plus the newer ones, but now sorted by the job you want done, because "email API" means four different things.

Pick the job first, then the vendor:

  • Send email from your app: signup links, receipts, password resets, newsletters.
  • Read email: connect to a user's Gmail or Outlook mailbox and act on it.
  • Build the email itself: templates, editors, multi-channel notifications.
  • Verify an address before you send to it, so bounces don't wreck your sender reputation.

Quick verdict: for most new apps, start with Resend or Postmark for sending, move to Amazon SES when volume makes cost the main problem, use Nylas or the Gmail and Outlook APIs when you need to read a user's inbox, and put a verifier such as Emailable or NeverBounce in front of any list you didn't collect yourself. Everything below is a starting point; pricing and free tiers change often, so check each vendor's page on the day you pick.

Changes since the 2024 post: Mailboxlayer was listed twice, so the duplicate is gone. I added Mailtrap, plus six newer tools marked "(new)": AutoSend, MailerSend, Loops, Plunk, useSend and AgentMail. That makes 41 entries, hence the "40+" in the title. The new entries come from recent third-party roundups and docs, not from my own testing, so the official links for useSend and AgentMail in particular are worth a quick check.

1. Sending email from your app

This is the group most people mean by "email API". You send an HTTPS request or an SMTP message, the provider handles delivery, and webhooks tell you about bounces, opens and complaints.

  • Resend is the developer-experience pick: a small API, good docs, and React-based email templates. It's the one I'd try first on a fresh Next.js or Hono project. See my Hono getting-started post for a backend to wire it into.
  • Postmark is built around transactional mail only (no bulk marketing blasts), and is repeatedly recommended in third-party comparisons for deliverability. Pick it when password resets and receipts must arrive.
  • Mailgun has routing, EU region options and inbound email parsing, which makes it a good fit when your app also receives mail.
  • Amazon SES is the cost leader at scale, per most roundups, but you do more of the work yourself: domain verification, sandbox exit request, bounce handling. Good if you already live on AWS.
  • Twilio SendGrid is the old default and sits next to SMS and voice in the same Twilio account. Free-tier terms there have changed over the years, so read the current plan before committing.
  • Brevo, Mailjet, SendPulse, Mailchimp mix transactional sending with marketing campaigns and contact lists. Choose one of these when marketing sends the volume and developers send the minority.
  • Elastic Email is a cheaper-tier sender with an API; compare deliverability carefully before moving real traffic.
  • Mailtrap adds a test inbox so staging mail never reaches real people, which saves a lot of embarrassment.

If you're also working out hosting and tooling bills, my SaaS running-cost estimate shows where email sits in the total.

2. Reading and managing a user's mailbox

Different problem: your product connects to the user's own Gmail or Outlook account, to read threads, draft replies or sync calendars.

  • Gmail API and Outlook API (Microsoft Graph) are the first-party options. Free to call, but you handle OAuth consent screens, scopes and app verification, which can take weeks for Gmail restricted scopes.
  • Nylas wraps Gmail, Outlook and IMAP behind one API. You pay for convenience and skip writing every provider twice.
  • EmailEngine turns IMAP and SMTP accounts into a REST API you host yourself, a fit when you can't send mailbox data to a third party.

I used mailbox access for something small in Scraping 500+ links from 100 emails.

3. Templates, editors and notifications

  • Courier routes one notification to email, SMS, push and chat from one API.
  • Enveloop and Waypoint focus on designing templates that render across email clients.
  • Maily.to is an editor you can embed so your users design emails inside your product.
  • Mok is also in this tooling bucket. I haven't tested it, so check what it does today before relying on it.

4. Verifying and finding addresses

Sending to dead addresses raises your bounce rate, and mailbox providers punish that. A verifier checks syntax, MX records, disposable domains and (often) whether the mailbox exists, before you send.

  • Emailable, NeverBounce, Debounce, Million Verifier, MailboxValidator, Mailboxlayer are the mainstream bulk and real-time verifiers.
  • Listwise, Verimail, My Email Verifier, Check-mail, Trumail are smaller or older. Confirm each is still maintained before building on it; I flagged Trumail and Check-mail in particular as ones to test first.
  • uProc and Neutrino bundle email validation with other data and utility endpoints.
  • Skrapp goes the other way: it finds professional email addresses, for outreach. Respect consent laws and platform terms.
  • Temp Mail gives disposable inboxes, useful for testing signup flows. Block these domains on your own signup form if you don't want throwaway accounts.

5. Newer tools worth a look

  • AutoSend is a newer developer-first platform for transactional and marketing email. Its docs describe a REST API, reusable templates with variables, a Node.js SDK, SMTP guides and an AI agent skill for integration. Third-party listings mention webhooks and a free tier; confirm pricing on its own site.
  • Loops targets SaaS lifecycle email: onboarding sequences, campaigns and transactional mail from one dashboard.
  • MailerSend focuses on automated, app-triggered messages with a template builder.
  • Plunk and useSend are open-source, self-hostable options (AGPL-3.0 per one comparison) for people who like Resend's shape but want to run it themselves. Plunk's code is on GitHub.
  • AgentMail gives AI agents their own inboxes through an API: two-way threads, programmatic inbox creation, webhooks. It's a Y Combinator company that reportedly raised a seed round in 2026. Useful if your agent has to sign up for services and read verification codes, though reviewers flag spam risk.

How to choose

  1. Just need signup and reset emails? Resend or Postmark.
  2. Big volume, cost is the worry, already on AWS? Amazon SES.
  3. Receiving and parsing inbound mail? Mailgun.
  4. Marketing plus product email in one tool? Brevo or Mailjet.
  5. Agent needs its own inbox? AgentMail.
  6. Need the user's own inbox? Nylas, or Gmail and Outlook directly.
  7. Self-hosting required? EmailEngine.
  8. Importing or buying lists? Run them through a verifier first, always.

Whatever you pick, set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC on your sending domain on day one. Providers will walk you through it, and skipping it is the most common reason mail lands in spam.

Building a full product around this? The SaaS starter kit post and auth comparison cover the pieces around email, and the same kind of list exists for payment gateways. More curated lists live in the SaaS directories and open-source sections.

FAQ

What is the best free email API for developers?

It depends on how you count "free". Resend, Brevo, Mailgun and Amazon SES all have a free or trial allowance, but daily caps, monthly caps and expiry periods differ and change. Compare the current limits on each pricing page rather than trusting a blog table, including this one.

Resend vs Postmark vs Amazon SES: which should I use?

Resend for the nicest developer experience on a new project, Postmark when transactional deliverability is the top priority, SES when cost at volume matters most and you're comfortable with AWS setup.

Do I need an email API or can I use SMTP?

SMTP works everywhere, but an HTTPS API gives you better error handling, webhooks and templates. Most providers offer both, so start with the API and keep SMTP for legacy tools.

Is Gmail API the same as a transactional email service?

No. Gmail API acts on a user's own mailbox and has tight sending limits. Use a transactional provider to send app email from your own domain.

Why verify emails before sending?

High bounce and spam-complaint rates damage sender reputation, and low reputation sends even good mail to spam. Verification removes the obvious bad addresses first.

About the data in this list

The original 35 names and links come from my 2024 list; the newer entries come from 2026 roundups and vendor docs. I couldn't open vendor pricing pages while rewriting this, so I haven't printed prices here, and the descriptions are general positioning rather than tested benchmarks. Entries I haven't used are marked. If a link has moved or a tool has shut down, tell me and I'll fix it.
